Uninsured and Under-Insured Motorists
A Texas law could mean cash settlement for you
The Texas Financial Responsibility Law stipulates that Texas drivers must be able to pay for the auto accidents they cause. The majority rely on their auto liability insurance to do just that.
In 2008, the minimum coverage amount increased to:
- $25,000 for each injured person, up to a total of $50,000 per accident
- $25,000 for property damage per accident
Minimum coverage increases again on January 1, 2011 to:
- $30,000 for each injured person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident
- $25,000 for property damage per accident
If you have been injured in an accident caused by a driver who is uninsured or under-insured, you could be entitled to cash settlement.
Carry uninsured and under-insured motorist insurance
Even with the financial responsibility law, many Texas drivers are uninsured. Nationwide, 14% of drivers are uninsured. That is why it makes a lot of sense to carry uninsured and under-insured motorist coverage. Such coverage protects you if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. Under-insured motorist coverage protects you if you are involved in an accident with a driver and your damages exceed the amount of coverage the driver carries.
While you are not required by law to carry this coverage, if you elect to have it, you can file a claim and receive compensation for your injuries and damage to your vehicle and other property.
